Steel pipe comes under many different names depending on what it looks like and exactly how it’s been made. It’s a durable material that doesn’t corrode very easily, so it can serve as functional piping for many applications.
Black Iron Pipe
This type of piping used to exist more commonly in houses built before the 1960s. It is actually a form of steel pipe, but it’s made with a slightly different composition of materials to make it a little more malleable. However, water does corrode this type of pipe fairly easily in comparison to steel.
Steel and black iron pipe both used to be common for water lines in homes, but they’ve fallen out of use in favour of plastic PVC instead. Now, black iron is mostly used strictly for gas lines because of its durability, while steel is often reserved for major water lines such as those leading from a main to your home or those in your septic system.
Some Major Differences
The main difference you’ll have to worry about with these two materials is their construction. Black iron comes in pieces and so runs of these pieces will have seams with connectors fastening them together. On the other hand, steel pipes are usually welded. Both can be hard to work with, especially in comparison to PVC, even for the pros.
This variation in construction leads to differences in repair methods as well. On the whole, leaks in runs of black iron pipe are much harder to repair, as their connections are the likely places for a leak. Since steel has welded joints instead, they’re far less likely to leak to begin with, and easier to fix when they do.
Both of these piping types usually cost more than PVC, which is part of the reason it’s so prevalent in construction, but steel actually trumps black iron for initial cost. The piping itself runs about 20 percent more expensive than black iron, although it saves energy and resources in the long run.

When trying to choose between a gasket and seal, your first impression might be that they are the same thing. After all, they perform essentially the same function, right? In some ways they are certainly the same, but there are some important differences that you should understand when deciding which one is right for your project.
Gaskets seal a connection between two components or flanges that have flat surfaces, while seals are used between engine parts, pumps and shafts that rotate. Every time any equipment is taken apart and then reassembled, a new gasket should be used. Along with this equipment, gaskets are used wherever a union or flange is required to prevent leaking. Gaskets are manufactured using many different materials. Viton, Neoprene, Nitrile, Pure Gum Rubber, EPDM Butyl, and SBR are just a sampling of the most common rubber or elastomeric materials commonly used to manufacture gaskets. Gaskets can be manufactured from many more diverse products including treated fibre (vegetable fibre), Cork, Cork and Rubber, Non-asbestos (Aramid fibre), Graphite, PTFE or closed cell sponge when a highly compressible gasket is required.
Gaskets are used in many industries including oil and gas, pulp and paper, electric generation and transportation. Gaskets are most commonly used as static seals.
As already mentioned, seals are used between engine parts, pumps and shafts that rotate rather than those that are static. Common uses for seals include keeping leaks from occurring at the end of the shaft where it comes out of the cover and sealing hydraulic lines. This type of seal is generally a moulded or machined product. Seals tend to be flat and round, while gaskets are often cut into different shapes so that they fit the components. Most seals are made of an outer ring that is metal and nests over an inner surface that is often made of rubber. The inner circle is tilted just a bit, which creates a lip for the seal. The lip is designed as a second barrier against any drops that manage to get past the first edge of the seal. The only bad thing about this design is the fact that they can only keep leaks from occurring at one end of the seal, so it is essential that it be installed correctly. If it’s installed backwards, you could end up with a leaky mess on your hands.
When installing the seal, it’s usually fitted into the hole by a press and then tapped further in using a hammer. Lubrication is usually necessary to keep the crankshaft from damaging the seal as it goes through it. Seals are often used in bearings, which is basically just a ball bearing surrounded by a rubber seal, which keeps it from leaking and sometimes reduces the amount of noise that occurs during operation. When a seal breaks down, the entire bearing must be replaced rather than just the seal.

What Is A Butterfly Valve?
A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that is used to regulate flow. A metal disc in the body of the valve is placed perpendicular to the flow in the closed position, and rotated one quarter-turn to be parallel to the flow in the fully opened position. Halfway rotations allow the regulation of liquid flow. They are often used in agricultural and water or wastewater treatment applications and are one of the most common and well-known valve types.
Advantages of a Butterfly Valve
Butterfly valves are similar to ball valves but have several more advantages. They are small and, when triggered pneumatically, open and close very swiftly. The disc is lighter than a ball, and the valve requires less structural support than a ball valve of comparable diameter. Butterfly valves are very precise, which makes them advantageous in industrial applications. They are quite reliable and require very little maintenance.
Disadvantages of a Butterfly Valve
One disadvantage of butterfly valves is that some portion of the disc is always presented to the flow, even when fully opened. The use of a butterfly valve therefore always results in a pressure switch across the valve, regardless of the setting.
Butterfly Valves Operating Electronically, Pneumatically or Manually
Butterfly valves can be configured to operate manually, electronically or pneumatically. Pneumatic valves operate most rapidly. Electronic valves require a signal to the gearbox to open or close, while pneumatic valves can be either single or double-actuated. A single-actuated valve is usually set up to require a signal to open with a failsafe, meaning that when power is lost the valve springs back to a fully closed position. Double-actuated pneumatic valves are not spring loaded and require a signal both to open and to close.
Automated pneumatic butterfly valves are both durable and reliable. Diminished wear increases the valve life cycle, which reduces operating costs otherwise lost in working hours to maintain the valves.
In the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industry a butterfly valve is used to interrupt product flow (solid, liquid, gas) within the process. The valves used in these industries are usually manufactured according cGMP guidelines (current good manufacturing practise).
